Ocular Morbidity in Egyptian Preterm Infants Discovered during Screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity

چکیده
Purpose: No information is available in the literature about the true incidence of ocular abnormalities in preterm infants of the Egyptian population. This study was carried on preterm infants who were screened for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and accidentally discovered to have other ocular morbidity. Methods: This prospective study was carried in a neonatal ICU (NICU) facility owened to a non-governmental society with 80 incubators on 981 premature infants during a two year neonatal screening program. Infants suffering from ocular diseases unrelated to ROP were recorded. Results: In premature infants, accidentally discovered ocular diseases included two cases of bilateral retinoblastoma (0.20%), ten cases of congenital infection (1.01%), twenty nine cases of congenital anomalies (2.95%) and twenty cases of birth trauma (2.03%). Conclusion: The incidence of ROP in low birth weight neonates (less than 1500gm) during the screening program was 23%. An additional 6.19% of children had undiagnosed ocular conditions including neoplastic, infectious, hemorrhagic and congenital lesions. Ocular findings in this study mounted to 29.19%, emphasizing the importance of routine ocular and fundus examination of all neonates in NICUs at one month of age.

Background: The most common cause of preventable blindness in children is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The most important risk factors for this disease are preterm delivery and low birth weight (LBW). This research was performed to evaluate the prevalence ofand risk factors for ROP in preterm neonates. Methods: Our research was a cross-sectional descriptive and retrospective study conduct...
متن کاملPlasma Leptin Concentrations in Preterm Infants with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
Intruduction: This study was conducted to determine blood levels of leptin in premature infants with proliferative ROP.Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a postnatal disorder of retinal vessels that develops in the incompletely vascularized retina of preterm infants. This disorder regresses in most patients but can lead to severe visual impairment. There is evidence that leptin stimulates angi...
متن کاملRetinopathy of prematurity: risk factors and clinical management in a cohort of ELBW infants
The etiology of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is multifactorial while ROP is also frequently associated with other co-morbidity characteristics in former preterm infants. We describe the current risk factors associated with the development of pre-threshold ROP in a cohort of 267 ELBW (extreme low birth weight, i.e. < 1 000 g) infants. We hereby confirm the combined risk associated with immat...

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a complex disease characterized by an aberrant developmental retinal angiogenesis in preterm infants and can carry significant visual morbidity, including retinal detachment and blindness. Though large scale, randomized clinical trials have improved our understanding of the pathophysiology and progression of the disease, the management of ROP remains a challe...
